The sort of book you can't put down and want to finish /5(12). The novel, published ininvolves an attempted mutiny of the whaling ship. Pym and two others repel the mutineers, killing or throwing overboard all but one. The spared mutineer, named Richard Parker, is kept aboard in order to help operate the ship.

T he English yacht Mignonette was a net tonnage, a foot cruiser built in It was an inshore boat, not made for long voyages. Inshe was purchased as a leisure vessel by Australian lawyer John Henry Want.

The yacht could only reasonably be transported to Australia by sailing, but she was a small vessel and the prospect of a 24,km voyage hampered Want's initial.

There's plenty of proof as well that Richard Parker is a wild tiger and that Pi maintains his separate identity throughout the novel. There are a few times when we're reminded of the fact that Richard Parker is a wild beast.

Late in the book, he kills all those cute little meerkats. Pi catches Richard Parker sizing. Unlike many novels in which animals speak or act like humans, Richard Parker is portrayed as a real animal that acts in ways true to his species.

It can be difficult to accept that a tiger and a boy could exist on a lifeboat alone, however, in the context of the novel, it seems plausible.
